“It’s not easy being green.” – Kermit The Frog

Kermit said it best.  It really ISN’T easy being green.  Over the past couple of years it seems the concept of being “green” has become more of a marketing slogan than a sincere goal to actually make the world a better place.  Our building was constructed in the 70’s…back when being green really had more to do with Kermit than the environment.  Our largest expense as a business is energy and we are continuously looking for ways to bring those costs down.  Over the past couple of years we have really begin to take a look at our facility and ways we can cut costs.  For instance, all of our lighting is now on sensors so they only activate when someone is in the room.  We’ve also recently changed all of our thermostats to electronic timers and today we are adding variable capacitors to improve power factor on our mechanical loads.  (I could write a book about power factor, just know that the closer you are to 1, the better it is!)  We are now in the process of replacing all the ballasts in our fluorescent lighting to more energy efficient units as well.

Trust me, none of this is cheap, but I want to think we are making a difference in the world.  What steps are you taking in your own office?
