Green Terror

1996 Camaro Z28 1LE

The car is a 1996 Camaro Z28 1LE. It is Polo Green in color, with a Dark Graphite interior. It is completely stock, except for a K&N air filter (installed in April 1996), a Flowmaster American Thunder 3" cat-back exhaust system (installed in March 1997), and a 32mm Addco solid front swaybar (installed June 1997). It also has over 300,000 miles on it, and is still running strong.

Some general specs on the car -- it has a 350c.i. (5.7L) LT1 engine, 3.42 gears, and a six-speed manual transmission. The wheels, both street and autocross, are the stock 16"x8" wheels (though one of the autocross sets is actually a takeoff set from a Pontiac Firebird and another is a set from a 1997 Camaro). I currently use 265/45R16 Kumho Ecsta V710  radials.

As a 1LE, it has a handful of suspension components that are different from the regular Z28s. First of all, it comes from the factory with double-adjustable Koni shocks; the piston diameter on the 1LEs is 46mm in both front and rear. Secondly, it came with a 32mm front swaybar, but the stock one was hollow; the regular Z28 comes with a 30mm hollow bar. The rear bar is the same in both the regular and 1LE Z28s in 1996 -- 19mm.

The spring rate for the 1LE is 360 lb/in in the front and 131-171 lb/in (variable) in the rear.

christmas tree      In a quarter mile, with the K&N filter and no other modifications, the car has done 13.87@100mph at 75-80 Dragway in Monrovia, Maryland. With the K&N filter and the Flowmaster exhaust, it has done 13.41@106mph at Mason-Dixon Dragway in Hagerstown, Maryland, and a 13.76@101mph at Maryland International Raceway in Budd's Creek, Maryland.

The newest addition to the stable is a 1997 Chevy Camaro Z28. It is Black in color, with a Light Gray interior. It, too, runs FS, with the only performance modifications being a Flowmaster American Thunder exhaust (dual outlet), a K&N air filter, Koni double adjustable shocks (from the green car), and a 35mm solid front swaybar.

Like the green car, it has the 5.7 liter LT1 motor, 3.42 gears and a six-speed manual transmission. Unlike the green car, this is not a 1LE, though the only option it came with is the rear defogger. A factory alarm was dealer-added.

The "black death," as it has already been affectionately named, will be campaigned by Pat Griffith's Blackshirt Racing, though it was originally just going to be a backup car.
