Autonomic Nervous System : Outta Your Control

Sympathetic versus Parasympathetic
Fibers arise from thoracolumbar
Fibers emerge from brain and sacral
Short preganglionic fibers; long postganglionic
Long preganglionic fibers; short postganglionic
Ganglia near spinal cord
Ganglia found in visceral effectors
Gray and white rami
No rami
Extensive preganglionic branching
Minimal preganglionic branching
All preganglionic fibers use ACh, most postganglionic are adrenergic
All cholinergic fibers

Parasympathetic Division (Craniosacral)

Sympathetic Division (Thoracolumbar)

    1. It can synapse with a postganglion neuron within the same ganglion
    2. It can ascend or descend the sympathetic chain, then synapse with a postganglion neuron
    3. It can emerge from the paravertebral ganglion without synapsing
