Ways to Adjust to the Affects of Aging:

[ Top ]

  • Get medical advice.
  • Many vision and hearing problems can be easily corrected.
  • Muscle stiffness and loss of strength can be improved with medication or special exercises.
  • Equip your car for safety.
  • Choose a car with power steering and brakes.
  • Install large mirrors, for better rear vision. A small rounded mirror in the corner of the side mirror helps you see your car's "blind spot."
  • Use seat pads and pedal extensions, if needed.
  • Ensure good visibility
  • Keep windows clean, inside and out.
  • Avoid smoking in the car.
  • Give your eyes a few minutes to adjust to the dark before driving.
  • Replace wiper blades when they start to streak and smear.
  • Have headlights adjusted, so they're aimed onto the road.
  • Insure good hearing, too
  • Keep the radio low, and wear a hearing aid, if needed.
  • Choose a safe time and place for driving
  • Plan trips ahead, so you can control when you drive and where you drive.

Driving Defensively:

  • Always be prepared for someone else's mistake
  • Keep a safe distance - leave at least 3 seconds between yourself and the car ahead.
  • Look ahead - be aware of what's happening several cars ahead.
  • Keep your eyes moving - look side-to-side; frequently check your mirrors.
  • Keep a "Safety Margin" - try to leave room all around you.
  • Use caution when turning.
  • Be willing to yield.
  • Steer with both hands.
  • Pass only when necessary and where legal.
  • Buckle up.
  • Watch for pedestrians.
