Appalachian Trail District Boy Scout Leader Training

Scouter Training Introduction

"On My Honor, I will Do My Best..."

There are a  number of leadership positions in the Boy Scouts of America, and adult leaders are called "Scouters."

A Scouter is a special person, who has made a commitment to help ALL boys for whom he or she is responsible.  This responsibility is to provide a safe and challenging environment for each youth to grow and develop at their own pace.

Those leaders who have accepted this responsibility and are trained in the Boy Scout method and approach are entitled to wear the "Trained" patch signifying their achievement.  Training requirements vary depending on the position the leader occupies.  In order for the unit to conduct any activities a minimum amount of training is required for the leaders.  For other activities, additional training is required.

The AT Training Program is a critical component in delivering the promise of Scouting to youth entrusted in our care.  Recently redeveloped, Spring 2003 we implemented this new program.

Why?  It combines the old program with new ideas and techniques for better leadership.

The new program provides:

·        Specific,

                ·        Relevant,

                                    ·        Useful

Ideas, Examples, Concepts, and Techniques that WORK when establishing and managing a successful Troop.                              The core training concept is developing a Trained Leader.

Been there, done that,… why does this involve me?    Simple- you can be better!   Shouldn’t your son have the best possible leader?   Shouldn’t the parents of your scouts expect the best?  If you have not had training in the past 5 years you may need a refresher.  And if you have not been to the new training you may be missing some key applications of scouting concepts:

·        How can a simple hike embody, instill, and benefit from core BSA concepts?

·        How can a campsite reinforce the fundamental BSA concept?

·        How can a Committee appropriately influence Scout advancement?

·        How is Success measured?

These and many more topics are covered in Leader Training.    Call and be a part of it.

PS-  it’s almost painless, you might even have fun!
