Visilma grew up knowing she wanted to learn magic. She could dodge flying rocks and avoid injuring herself from fall with some of the best of the people in the tribe. She just was not as fast to grasp things as most of those that became wizards. Most of the experienced wizards in the tribe would not take her as a student. They looked down on her as if she were beneath their notice. One day she sat in the middle of the village and cried quietly to herself. Her father had been a wizard before he died. She was not allowed to live up to his expectations for her.
Growing up the the shadows of such people as Awnday Ar'iemay made it hard for her to compete for a spot. She sat there in the center of the village hidden away in the shadow of a building crying. Alion Ca'ranicy, her grandmother, spotted her there. She came over and sat with the miserable girl-woman. They talked for a while, and Alion said that she would talk to someone for her. Visilma didn't know what to say. Alion hardly ever talked to her. It might have been because Alion's cousin Solina Ca'viniar allegedly brought shame to the tribe by having a half human child Sorack Linsandin. Alion went to talk to Awnday's mother Renaya. Renaya agreed to teach Visilma, but only out of family debt.
Visilma did not know the reason she was accepted. She worked hard at her studies and eventually gained Renaya's praise. Visilma studied with another pupil, Matea Fi'nashari. On one of Awnday's visits home, she decided to take Matea and Visilma on the road with her. Renaya did not think either of the girls were fit for adventure, but Awnday insisted. They packed their things as quickly as possible and left the next week with Awnday in the lead.
