Ranjilia’s father was a successful merchant as was her mother. Some say that Fate made her birth possible. Her father was an old man when she was conceived and died before she was born. Her mother was an aged elf and died when she was eight. Her half-sister, Jaralia Al-Afyali bint Farim, a full elf, has raised her since their deaths. Jaralia is a modestly successful merchant woman in Afyal City. She was grooming one of her courtiers to be her third husband. The courtier, Aljan, disappeared while on a trading mission in the north with Jaralia’s first husband, Hazman. Hazman came back badly beaten, near death, grieving the loss. Rajnilia was sent out to find Aljan and to see if she could determine what happened. Her search for Aljan has taken her into the land of the Ajami, foreigners. She feels vulnerable and afraid away from the Land of Fate. She prays that Fate stays with her in these foreign and forbidding lands.

Her training as an Askara started with Hazman when she was twelve. He was always stern with her, but never unkind. He became a trusted mentor and friend. Jaralia encouraged her in her studies as a Sha'ira. She is currently the heiress to part of her sister’s company and estates, along with Jaralia’s two husbands.

She tends to wear clothing of her homeland; her veil hanging on the left side of her face. Her attire is loose fitting except at the cuffs of her sleeves and at her ankles. She does not have the racial prejudices as those in the north. Her best friend is an orog.

She was part of a group that was supposed to be on a mission for the church of Tyr when it went awry and she got stranded in Ravenloft for a small period of time. She died there.

She woke up strapped to a bed. When she was released she and her companions were told that they had to stop their former selves from making the same mistake that got them caught in Ravenloft. To do that, they were ordered to kill their former selves, and take up where they left off. She is still dubious about this. Since she owed her life to the mage that saved her life, she will go along with his orders. She lost all of her life experiences, but somehow managed to keep what she learned. She is also not set back when it comes to how much punishment she can take. She does not know how this is possible, but she will find out sometime when she in more powerful.
