In the beginning of her life, her name was Carina Natayana. At least that is what she was told. She grew up being fostered in a keep after being abandoned by one of her parents or both. She was always bitter about the way she was treated as a child, and even more when she was starting to become a woman. She was not abused in a physical sense just neglected by her foster parents in favor of their natural children, or if she was placed in the home of a single person, she was often left alone for days having to fend for herself. That lead to trouble.
When she was old enough, she started pilferring what she needed from the communal kitchen or from stores. Sometimes she was caught; sometimes she wasn't. Each time she was caught, she was placed in the care of a new fosterer. Most of the people in the keep knew her name, but she learned to hate it. She also learned that there was no true good in this life. She became even more rebellious when the resident wizard took her in. He was one of those fosterers who left her to her own devices frequently leaving her tasks to do and expecting them to be done when he got home. What he didn't know was that she was looking in his library. She learned what she needed to know, and then she was caught.
He was enraged. After that she hardly had a moment to herself. He never left her alone. Even when she slept, she knew he was watching her. She was made a prisoner in his rooms. His temper finally receeded after about 6 months, and that was when he wanted to know what she had learned. He was not overly appreciative and was quick to critisize her every mistake. Even a simple mix up of words, and he would scream at her at the top of his lungs. After another six months and two years of living with him, he told her to leave him. That was a relief for her, and then she was angry. She was crushed but not for long.
After her "master" kicked her out, she was placed with the family of a guardsman. He wasn't to thirlled with the arrangement; he had no choice. He took the girl into his home and found out the true nature of her. She was a theiving wench. Since she was still a child, he couldn't get rid of her. He was desperate for ideas of how to curb her natural tendancies; so one day he put a sword into her hand, and she started to learn to fight with steel in ernest.
She was pushed hard, and when she slipped, he was there to berate her. He pushed her harder than the wizard ever could. She was almost always tired and never given much rest. She girlish body became hard, and after two years under his tutilage, she started to blosson into womahood. Her foster parents realized that her presence in his household might cause problems at that point. He sent her back to the wizard. He was not thrilled to get her back.
The wizard grilled her again, and harder. After two years of constant excersise, she was unused to sitting around. She became edgy, and her "master" noticed. He decided that she needed to learn the laws of the land. That was when she was placed in the hands of the magistrate. The magistrate was no happier about the arrangment than Corina was.
He took on his new responsibility with hesitation but did as he was bidden. Corina was going to learn the laws of the land if it made her moldy in the process. Luckily for her he knew that he couldn't closet her forever, so he did let her out once a day to excersise with her weapons. The magistrate pounded the laws into her head and made sure she understood the ramifications of her breaking the laws. On her seventeenth birthday, she was released from the magistrate.
After that she was on her own. The lord of the keep felt that she was old enough to take care of herself. He felt no need to keep her in fosterage anymore, so he told her that she could work in the keep or leave. She chose to leave. That was when the wizard became ill.
Corina, without knowing why, stayed with him through his illness. She knew she had some skill but not enough. She tried every combination of herbs she knew but nothing worked. She was devistated. Before he lost consciousness forever, he told her of a gift he had for her. It was a book of spells. She held that gift to her chest with one hand, his hand with the other. She cried as his eyes closed for the last time.
When his funeral was over, she made to take her leave of the only place she knew. Before she could reach the gate, the guardsman, who had been her foster parent for a time, ran up to her and gave her a gift of his own, her first weapons. He handed them to her with due ceremony, and she thanked him for the gifts. She belted on the swords and sholdered the bow. She looked up once while she was putting her gifts of weaponry on and saw a brief smile on the guardsman's face. He nodded in either appreciation that she knew what she was doing or trying to say that he would miss her. She never did discern that small smile and nod, for he turned away at that point and went back to his post. Tearfully she left the keep, and when she looked back on it, no one was there to see her off excpet the guards at the gate.
All she had with her was the weapons, her spellbook, and a backpack with second hand clothes. She knew that was all she was going to get from the keep and her string of fosterers. She turned her back on the keep and vowed that one day she would return, but only after she had proven that she was worthy of respect. She also knew that she needed gold, a lot of it fast. Also, she needed a new name...
