This story is after "Stemwinder."
The kiss lasted what seemed to be forever but still not long enough. They held onto each other and just looked into each other's eyes as if for the first time. This had been building between them since they stood together at the Lincoln Memorial when Lee told Amanda about the loss of his former partner. She had found the way to get him to open up that surprised him. He gave her life a new purpose that she had never considered before that moment at the train station. Everything that they had been through together and the feelings that those events evoked coursed through them in that tender moment.
She rested her head on his shoulder, her hand clasped in his on his chest. He thought of their first dance at the costume party that he had invited her to. He had actually enjoyed talking to her, well, up to the point when she told him she hadn't brought the package with her. She thought about what he had brought into her life, and how he had never made it sound like fun actually telling her that death was possible at any moment.
As they gradually released each other, he took a breath. "I'll go see what Billy wanted. Finish this conversation at 8?" He asked.
She smiled at him and simply said yes not needing to know where, since what they had to say to each other was private. What could be more private than his apartment?
Since there was nothing to do for the rest of the day, Amanda went home to make dinner for the family and check the boys' homework. While making dinner, she thought about how she felt just an hour ago standing in their office. After dinner and dishes, she went upstairs to check her outfit in a mirror. She hadn't changed when she got home. Since nothing had splattered on her while making dinner then doing the dishes, she decided that she didn't need to change.
She went downstairs and found her mother and children watching television.
"Mother, a friend from work invited me out tonight. Do you mind?" she asked.
"A date Amanda?" Dotty asked with interest.
"Yes, mother, a date. I don't know when I will be home," she said as she pulled out a pad of paper, "but here is the number of where we will be if you need me." The number Amanda wrote down was Lee's.
Lee arrived at his apartment with the intent of straightening it up to pass the time. He looked around and saw that he didn't have to do all that much. Amanda's influence could be felt even here. All he had to do was wash his coffee cup, a plate, and a knife that were in the sink from his coffee and toast that morning. In the bathroom he needed to just pick the towel up off the floor. He didn't know what was going to happen that night, all he did know is that he didn't want any part of the conversation to be about his cleaning habits or lack thereof. As he thought about the times she had been in one of his various apartments over the last three years, he realized that this was the first purely social visit she would be making.
Lee has wanted this for almost three years now so made it last as long as possible, so he went slowly. Each thrust was so gentle that she pressed her fingertips into his back in pleasure. In this moment nothing was hidden; the last of the barriers was down. Their desires were being sated. They were lost in the tactile sensations that were familiar but with so much added depth.
For once life conspired to give the lovers a rest they really deserved. The aparement had stayed silent the entire evening, allowing them to explore their passion for each other. It was only after she had on her coat and as he reached to open the front door, did they hear the dreaded sound of the telephone.
