Castle

Castle and Beckett were sitting in a diner eating a quick lunch, while waiting for the homicide suspect to be brought in by Espisito and Ryan. They had recently set a rule that they would not discuss their cases while out like this. Castle knew that sometimes Beckett needed to take little breaks from cases, so lunch was a perfect time and place for her to unwind a bit.

Beckett had said something surprising to Castle. He smiled and laughed.

"I want to spend the rest of my life trying to figure you out Kate." Castle said laughing then taking a sip of his milkshake.

Beckett swallowed her bite of burger then said. "Okay Rick."

He took another sip of his shake, and she took another bite of her burger. Suddenly they looked into each other's eyes upon the realization that they had become engaged. Kate's normally hard eyes turned soft, and Rick's normally jovial eyes turned loving. He held his hand out, and she slid her fingers between his. Each gave a quick squeeze at the same time. With smiles they finished their lunch.

After the case was over, Kate went into her top desk drawer to get a pen to sign the arrest form. In the drawer she saw a pale blue box. She secreted the box from the drawer and opened it in her lap. The ring within was perfect with the line of small diamonds inset into the gold so it would not tear her gloves. She smiled as she slid it on her finger noting the perfect fit.

Rick was coming out from the break room with two cups of coffee when he stopped to watch her discovery. He waited until he saw her smile before coming over to her desk. He handed a coffee to her, which she took with her left hand showing him she was wearing the ring. He smiled with relieved love.
